Reader’s Workshop

Readers dove into the world of nonfiction! We looked through nonfiction books to find similarities on how the text is organized. We went on a hunt to find text features within our text, with our reading partners and then find text within magazines! 2nd graders can often identify text features (photographs, maps, headings, labels, captions, glossary, diagrams, etc.) but have a difficult time naming a purpose for the features. When your child reads nonfiction at home, please help to ensure that they are reading all text features rather than skimming over them.

Author’s Celebration

Authors worked so hard this week to edit, revise and publish one piece of writing! Writers created invitations for our family and some important people around the school. They revised with a checklist and with their partners. I have never seen these writers work harder. By the time our Author’s Celebration rolled around on Wednesday, the authors were ready to share all their hard work! We celebrated by having parents, 3rd graders and even Mr.Shaw (!!!) hear/read our writing. Guests were able to leave compliments on our writing and let us know some craft moves we did well! We finished the event with apple juice toasts and cookies! Thanks to all who were able to make this momentous occasion! I sent home your childs’ writing from the unit, published piece, compliments page and a rubric. Enjoy reading through your child’s writing! Next week we will begin a new unit featuring nonfiction writing.

Math

This week we finished unit 3 in math. Students will take the chapter 3 math test today and I will send their tests home next week. Please know that if there are areas that your child has not yet mastered, I will be working with them on those skills during Math Workshop. Please work with them at home to review these skills too. I will reach out to you personally if there are any glaring issues I notice!

Social Studies

We began a new unit on maps this week! We learned about the difference between a globe and a map and search in an atlas to see what important things are included on a map. Today we will read a book titled “Me On The Map” and students think about all of the different place they live in the world (my street, city, country, etc.).

Pete the Cat

We had a wonderful time at the Pete the Cat Musical! I feel so fortunate to work in a district that plans such amazing opportunities for the students!
