Literacy

During Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop we are continuing our deep dive into nonfiction. Readers have been busy learning how to navigate through nonfiction text features. If we don’t understand a word in the text, we now know that we should read on and see if we can use some of the text features to help us! Writers set individual goals to help them better their writing. We also learned how to write for an audience. When we write a nonfiction book we need to ask ourselves “who is the audience?” and “what do they want to learn?”. This can help us to make sure we including relevant information that people will want to read.

Math Workshop

I am working with the mathematicians on reading a problem independently and answering it correctly. I am finding that many kids are completing problems but never double check to see if it makes sense. Lots of silly mistakes! We have been answering problems together so they can see how to write and explain their thinking. As we near the end of quarter 2 I will be assessing their skills to see where they are at with the current skills. Be on the lookout for this test to come home before winter break!

Science/Social Studies

This week we began learning about the earth and how it is formed. We will be learning about landforms and discovering how they are formed as well as how they interact with each other. Students were able to create their own glossary to teach others about landforms!

OSC

OSC is holiday charity uniting local churches, businesses and schools. Please help us out and bring in canned or boxed food, personal care items, paper products, new and unwrapped toys, hats, and mittens! There is a box inside our classroom where we are collecting the items. We will be collecting items until Monday, December 16. Thanks in advance for helping those in need!

Relationships and Friendships

This week we kicked off our social emotional unit on “relationships and friendships”. We started talking about a teacher-student relationship and why that relationship is so important. Students filled out surveys to let me know how they feel our relationship is going this year. Next week we will move into lessons on “communication and friendships.”
