Readers Workshop

Readers have been working really hard with their series clubs to become experts on their characters over the past 2 weeks! This week we also took a closer look at becoming an expert on the author’s craft. Now that we are reading chapter books it’s important to pay close attention to the precise words that the author uses. Sometimes we have to reread text a few times to really understand what the author is trying to convey! Our chapter books don’t have as many illustrations in them so it’s also important that we make pictures in our mind! Paying close attention to the extraordinary language can be a difficult task for 2nd grade readers! Be sure to help your 2nd grader to slow down and notice the amazing words!

Phonics

Word Builders have been HARD at work focusing on long A, E and I. It’s incredible to watch the kids work together to sort words, create tips and find commonalities amongst love vowels and have fun while doing it all! For each long vowel we focused on 4-5 common spellings.

Math Workshop

We wrapped up unit 7 last week and this week the mathematicians created their own question to survey their friends on! Some popular topics were favorite games, favorite toys, favorite season, favorite sport, etc. Then the students created a bar graph, pictograph, line plot and created their own questions! The last step was having their math partner analyze their data and answer the questions! They had a blast!

Yesterday we kicked off unit 8 and learned about 2D shapes! We had a lot of fun creating Shape Sundaes and just reengaging ourselves with 2d shapes. Our 2nd grade curriculum will focus a ton on the attributes of the shapes and being able to describe the number of sides, vertices, angles, right angles and whether or not it has parallel sides. By the end of 2nd grade, students must be able to identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and hexagons as well as identify their attributes!

Science

We finished up learning about habitats and how important they are to an ecosystem and transitioned into learning about plants! We looked closely at the life cycle of a plant and dissected a seed! Then we put another seed in a bag with a wet paper towel and hung it on the window to see if it will grow inside the bag! We can’t wait to check on our seed each day and record our findings in our Seed Journals. We finished up learning about habitats and how important they are to an ecosystem and transitioned into learning about plants! Earth Day

This week was extra special because we learned just how special our planet earth is! We read several books that helped us to understand just how important it is to take care of our planet. Even though we are 2nd graders, we still can play a big part in making the earth a better place! We celebrated on Earth Day by painting our hands and turning it into a beautiful earth! Then we made an “Earth Day Promise!” Check our Seesaw to see the beautiful Earth Day artwork and writing!
