Report Cards

Your child will bring home their quarter 2 report card today. You will find that there are a few blanks on the report card. Those standards have been left blank because they have not been assessed yet. I also attached a document that has your child’s reading level on it. I included their level from the end of 1st grade, Q1, and Q2 so you can see how much they have grown over the course of the year! I included a leveled list of book series to aide you in helping your child to navigate books at home. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions regarding your child’s report card.

Readers Workshop

This week we finished up our unit on “Becoming Experts of Nonfiction”! Readers finished researching an animal, gathering information and deciding what was most important to teach their audience. We began the week with the readers learning how to use kiddle as a search engine. They typed in their animal name and found images they thought could teach their audience about their animal. Readers then put the image in a document and wrote a caption and printed. They were beyond excited to learn how to use Word and print things off.

All week long they worked on their teaching posters so they would be ready for todays big Museum. Readers used a checklist to be sure they included text features, facts, kept things organized and neat. Today we will have our kindergarten buddies come and hear our new learning as we present our animals during our Museum.

Social Emotional Learning

It was great to come back to school and review one of our favorite books “What If Everyone Did That?“What a great lesson for kids to learn early on that their actions affect others. Each student then received a post-it or two to write down what a perfect classroom might sound like and look like! We compiled our post its and came up with a poster to represent our class from now until the end of the year.

As we moved through the week the students were introduced to “growth mindset.” A growth mindset has a strong desire to learn. Someone with a growth mindset loves challenges and sees failures as a way to learn, grow and stretch abilities. Someone with a “fixed mindset” doesn’t like to try new things. They avoid challenges and assume that character, intelligence and creative ability are unchanging. We will dive deeper in growth mindset through read alouds, activities and conversations over the next couple weeks!

MAP- NWEA Testing

Next Monday and Wednesday we will take the math portion of the MAP test. We have decided to break each test up into two days to give students a break and help them to not rush through the test. We will begin on Monday and then pick it back up on Thursday!
