Reader’s Workshop

This week readers worked on synthesizing their text by rereading to better understand how stories fit together. They looked out for patterns, noticing when the same kinds of things happen again and again. Readers studied patterns they saw, hidden clues in the pictures or words, and if there’s a problem in the story, the pages show how that problem starts and ends.

Readers then learned how to look closely at our characters. It’s important to not only learn about the characters through the words but also to study the pictures carefully. We can learn so much about the story but we really think about our characters all everything they face. Readers also worked on their fluency when they are reading dialogue! They don’t just read like the character, they become the character! Please help support all of these great strategies at home! Reading every night is such a crucial piece to the puzzle!

Phonics Workshop

This week we kicked off Phonics Workshop. In first grade the students all participated in phonics workshop! We will carry over the hard work they did in 1st as well as reviewing some 1st grade concepts that they missed due to Covid! [Click here to view the Caregiver Video]() (username: bice248 password: family). This video gives you some insight on some topics we will cover and how you can help support your 2nd grader at home.

In Phonics Workshop we revisited some really important concepts this week! We looked at our names REALLY closely to see what phonics patterns we had in our name. Some of us had digraphs, blends, silent e’s, long vowels, short vowels, etc! It is so helpful to point these important concepts out when you are reading with your child at night! 2nd grade Phonics Professions have been studying word so carefully after we started Phonics Workshop! It has been wonderful to see how excited they have gotten about words! We also spent some time reviewing blends, digraphs and slient e! Ask your Phonics Professor if they can teach you about these important rules!

Writer’s Workshop

These writers have grown so much in just a few short weeks, They are stretching their stories across three pages, picking a small moment, and even REVISING! Early this week they learned how important revising can be! You may notice that your child’s writing will have things crossed, revision strips taped in, and it looks like a complete mess. But guess what??? Your 2nd grade writer will be SO PROUD of their hard work! When students use a pen to write, we can really see all their hard work in revising. It’s incredible to see how much ownership these little writers have! From now on their writing folder will stay at school so you won’t see their writing come home until the end of their unit. Every now and then I will try to have them share their writing with you on Seesaw so you can see their progress!

Social Emotional: Self Awareness

This week we wrapped up our unit on Self Awareness. Such an important piece of my classroom is have social emotional lessons be a part of our morning meeting every day! Sometimes its a discussion, picture book or even an application piece where they are collaborating or creating something! I feel very strongly that explicitly teaching kids how to regulate emotions, work with others, becoming socially aware, etc., helps kids to regulate themselves when they get in difficult situations! Our unit on self awareness brought attention to what a role model is, who they are and how we can be one! The unit also helps kids to think of their strengths and to think of some things they can work on! Next week we will begin a new unit where we will focus on self-management! Topics we will learn about will be self regulation, mindfulness, handling difficult situations, and impulse control!

Math

Next week we will finish up unit 1 from our Everyday Math curriculum. The first unit has been a review from first grade which has been really helpful for me to see concepts they may have lost during the past few months. One big take away from this week was the terminology “odd” and “even.” Your child should be able to successfully tell you if a number is odd or even! By the end of this week, she will Prodigy and Connect Ed games will be available once we return to school 5 days a week! If you are looking for your child to get some extra math practice, please continue to have them visit those resources!
