Literacy
We have been loving winding down our fairy tale unit in reading and our nonfiction writing unit! Friday we will have a small celebration to celebrate all of our accomplishments in reading and writing. Please have all school books returned by Friday!
Phonics
We kicked off a mini unit on Word Collecting this week. We read a fabulous book titled Word Collectors which was about a boy named Jerome who collected tons and tons of words. He learned that one of the most special things about collecting words was sharing the words with others. We have been really busy collecting and organizing our words. We started to sort the words into action, describing, and thing words! Hopefully you have heard your 2nd grader getting excited about new words while they read or hear conversations at home.
Math Workshop
We are midway through our final unit in math and time is flying by! During this last unit we are really jumping around and fine tuning some major concepts for 3rd grade. Subtraction being one of them. Over the summer it is vital for your child to continue practice their subtraction skills! This week we focused on subtracting multi-digit numbers. Your child should be able to successful solve a double digit subtraction problem in multiple ways! Check in with your mathematician to hear all the ways they know to solve!
Social Emotional Learning: Stereotypes
We finished our unit on respect learning about stereotypes. We focused on gender stereotypes and how valuable it is to be aware of stereotypes. The second graders learned how hurtful stereotypes can be and how it’s important that we stand up for ourselves and others when we hear others use them.
End of Year Checklist
- All school books need to be returned ASAP! Some of the students borrowed books I had from the MB library and I need to return them! Please search high and low for any and all books that are library books OR my library books at your home.
- June 3rd- Field Day: Each grade level will have a special lunch outside AND a field day to celebrate the end of the year. I ask that your child wear running shoes and bring a water bottle. There will also be a special lunch served: Grilled all beef hot dog, baked beans & watermelon or pizza kit. Your child can still bring a lunch from home if they wish!
- June 7th- Half Day: Part of our MB tradition is to end the year is to have a little snack picnic at NE Park. This is a little park at the end of one of our neighborhood’s cal-de-sacs. It is within walking distance (20 minute walk). Students are allowed to bring a ball and toys (nothing with wheels or electronics) to the park. A good rule of thumb is if they can carry it in a backpack, they can bring it AND if it got lost, they wouldn’t mind! They should wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a water bottle, and snack. No parents are allowed due to COVID.
- June 8th- Half Day and last day of school!
