Literacy Celebration

We LOVED celebrating all things series and opinions! It was really fun to see how our reading unit and writing unit intertwined! We finished our Series Clubs by readers learning how to debate and picking a side to state their opinion about their character! It was really fun to hear how much kids learned about their character which is such a big piece of understanding more difficult text. Readers finished the unit by creating posters to teach others about their main character. They used facts as well as opinions on their posters to teach their peers.

We finished our opinion writing with a bang! The writers loved nominating their favorite books for awards. In their award nominations they provided reasons, evidence, and most importantly, their opinion! We celebrated by revising, fancying up and having a juice box toast! These writers have grown so much!

Next week we will begin our last units in reading and writing! We will be focusing on writing nonfiction and in reading we will learn about fairy tales and fables! What a fun way to end the year!

Phonics

We finished our study of long vowels! If you find your 2nd grader misspelling some common long vowel patterns- work with them to find their mistake. Now we are moving into the last third of the unit on building bigger, longer and more complex words. In the final bend we will work on breaking apart multisyllabic words. One example might be the word, meanwhile. We can break meanwhile up as follows: m-ean-wh-ile. There are some long follow patterns and a digraph. Helping your child to break words up can really them with their decoding skills.

Math

We had a lot of fun in math workshop with a lot of hands on learning! Mathematicians learned about 3D shapes and their attributes. They learned some important vocabulary when describing 3D shapes: faces, vertices, and edges. We created shapes out of marshmallows, wrote riddles ot describe them, played headbands, and even create 3D nets. We wrapped up the week learning how to partition shapes. This is a great introduction to arrays and multiplication. We used Cheez-Its to partition large rectangles equally! What a fun hands on week with shapes!

Science

Scientists rocked it out this week! Over the weekend our radish plants grew like crazy! We began an experiment last week where we put some plants in the sunlight and some we covered with aluminum foil. We realized on Monday that plants can grow without sunlight BUT they won’t be nearly as healthy. Our plants in the dark were wilting, light green and did not look healthy The plants that were in the sunlight were deep, green and thriving. We loved conducting the experiment! They will bring their radish plants home today! Feel free to transfer them to a bigger pot once they get home.

Mother’s Day

Happiest of Mother’s Day to you and your families! The 2nd graders loved creating a beautiful keepsake for their moms! I hope they bring a tear to your eye but most likely a giggle. 2nd graders say the funniest things! Have a wonderful weekend celebrating with your families.
