Reader’s Workshop

The students had a blast working on their fluency through Reader’s Workshop! On Monday, the students began the week by reading a St.Patrick’s Day poem and we reviewed everything we know about fluency. That prepared the readers to transition into our Reader’s Theatre groups! The kids had a blast working in groups to practice their lines, decode words, act and create props! Our final performances are today the kids could not be more proud and excited to show off all their hard work to their classmates. Check out Seesaw to see some videos and photos from the week!

Math

Second grade math just keeps ramping up each week! We finished our unit 6 test on Monday and I will share those with you at conferences if I have concerns! This next unit will focus on adding bigger and more numbers together. Below is one of example of adding partial sums! This has been an easy transition from expanded form (ex. 356= 300 + 50 + 6).

We have been learning strategies to add 3 or more numbers together: look for doubles, combos of 10, use friendly numbers etc. But now we are transitioning into adding 3 double digit numbers. This is a huge jump for some kiddos! Below are a couple different ways students can add these big numbers! When we add in one more number it can get confusing for some kids. We took a few extra days to practice these important skills!

Tapping Trees

Our class was responsible for tapping the 2nd grade trees yesterday and today! It was worth the wait! The class really enjoyed working together to find the jugs, detach them from the tree, measure the sap, and then pour them into big jugs so we could wheel them back into the school. Our class will collect sap one more time next week (Thursday). Then the sap will get turned into syrup, just in time for use to celebrate and have our syrup on March 31st at lunch! The lunchroom will be serving confetti pancakes and I will give the syrup to all the kids to try our very own syrup! If your child would prefer to bring pancakes/waffles or anything to dip in the syrup, that works too! I will be sure to send a reminder out prior to March 31st!

St. Patrick’s Day

We had a ton of fun on Wednesday celebrating everything green! We learned about the history of St.Patrick’s Day, read a few silly books, and brainstormed what makes us all feel lucky! Hopefully your son/daughter was able to share with you how lucky they feel to have each and everyone of you for a mom or dad! They also enjoyed a directed drawing where they learned to draw a leprechaun and then finished their masterpiece with watercolor!

End of Quarter 3

Quarter 3 is a wrap! It’s hard to believe we are closing out the third quarter! Today your child will bring home their 3rd quarter report card. Be sure to review it and let me know if you have any questions and we can discuss it next week, at your child’s parent/teacher conference! I will email out a Zoom link on Monday for everyone to use for their conference! Looking forward to discussing your child’s growth with you!
