Reader’s Workshop

This week in Reader’s Workshop we worked with our reading partners on how to give a book introduction. When we get with our partners it’s important we give an introduction to the book so they can have a sneak peak into the book! Partners worked on not saying “Tell me! Tell me!“when they come to a work they don’t know. Our partner helps to coach us and gives us strategies inside of just giving us the word.

We also learned that this year we will “grow like beanstalks.” Not only will we grow taller and stronger, but we will get to decide HOW to read. We practiced reading a book in lots of different ways. Some of us chose to read our books silly while others decided to read it in a newscaster voice. We had a ton of fun reading in all sorts of ways! Next week we will start to think about how a book WANTS to be read!

Our word sorts are off to a great start in class and it sounds like the students had a fun time sorting at home. I will be moving kids into different groups as I see fit based on their spelling and reading needs.

Writer’s Workshop

This week we finished our mini unit titled “Reving Up Our Writing Muscles.” We worked hard to really tell our stories bit by bit in our writing. We finished the week looking at the book “Julius, Baby of the World” by Kevin Henkes. We read the book and and looked at his craft as an author. The writers realized that he repeated text, uses speech bubbles and divides his pictures to show several important details in one illustration! This year we will study a ton of mentor texts and learn how they craft their writing as an author. We can’t wait to learn from the best!

Writers were also introduced to “Author’s Share.” Writers are able to sign up to share their writing with the class. At the end of Writer’s Workshop each day, a few authors share their writing on the projector AND get to use a microphone. We finish the session by giving the authors compliments and things they can work on!

Math

This week we finished Chapter 1 in our Everyday Math curriculum. Chapter 1 was a review on all the 1st grade skills. Many of the students still have a difficult time identifying coins and counting them! Please work with your mathematician to be sure they can identify the coins and how much they are worth! We will continue to work on adding coins together and eventually solve word problems involving money!

NWEA MAP Testing

Due to no school on Thursday, we will take the math MAP test on Wednesday and the reading portion next Friday!

Social Emotional Learning

We have been learning about emotions in our morning meetings. We also talked about when we have different emotions our body language and facial expression changes. We practiced using our body and face to show others our emotions! By explicitly talking and showing our emotions it helps students to self regulate and be more aware of how others are perceiving them!

Scholastic Book Orders

Thanks to all of the families who purchased books for their readers! I was able to receive 10 new books for our class library! The students are going to be soooo excited when they see the new titles!
