Readers Workshop

We had a wonderful week in Readers Workshop finishing our unit where we focused on growing our reading skills as 2nd graders. We had a full day of celebrating on Thursday! Since we have been “growing like beanstalks,” we wrote on beanstalk leaves about our favorite reading strategies and what we do when we come to a tricky word. Then we continued our celebration by creating bookmarks with our favorite reading strategies that we want to remember to “bring” to the next unit with us! We finished the morning by reading another book in the Mercy Watson series, finger flashlight reading with a partner, and a juice toast and cookie! We had such a fun morning celebrating our growth! Next week we will begin an author study on Cynthia Rylant before we kickoff 2021 learning about nonfiction!

Writers Workshop

Writers have really enjoyed exploring realistic fiction. We studied different series closely to see what we can learn from those writers. Most students have at least one series with 2-3 books in the series. We have really been working hard at including dialogue between characters and being sure not to always say “said” but using interesting words like shouted, yelled, whispered, and answered! Next week we will revise, edit and fancy up before we celebrate our writing on Thursday.

Math

Mathematicians dove into the world of place value and base ten blocks. At this point in the year, your child should be able to identify and compare numbers up to 1000. We spent the week looking closely at triple digit numbers, comparing them and writing them in different ways. We played a game called roll it, draw it and write it (in expanded form). Mathematicians had a ton of fun talking about these big numbers and how the order of digits in a number is REALLY important. Next week we will continue to learn about place value and finish the year off with a 2nd grade end of quarter 2 assessment. This information will be shared with you when report cards are send home in January.

Social Studies

This week we continued in our Social Studies curriculum learning a little bit more about how citizens live together. We learned about the importance of government and why we have a government from a national, state and community perspective. We also learned a little bit about laws and the purpose those serve in a community. Students giggled a lot thinking about life and school without laws and rules but then soon realized how important it is to have all these laws.

Spirit Week

Next week the Student Council has organized a Spirit week! I changed Thursday a little bit so we have a chance to get in some party attire to celebrate winter break coming up!

Monday- Wear your Husky Colors (blue, white or black)

Tuesday-Team Day (Wear something from your favorite team! GOOO STATE!!!)

Wednesday- Wacky Day (Anything goes! Wear something wacky: hats, hair, clothes, etc)

Thursday- Holiday Attire (Fancy clothes or party clothes) or Ugly Sweater

Friday- Cozy Pajama Day

Holiday Party

Thank you so much to all the families who signed up to donate supplies and treats for our party! On Thursday we will celebrate the holidays by playing games, eating some treats, crafting and of course, DANCING!
