Reader’s Workshop

We had a busy week in Reader’s Workshop establishing routines and building stamina. We defined the word stamina as the ability to do something for a long time! We are training our minds and bodies to read for a long period of time! Our short term goal is 25 minutes but our long term goal is 45 minutes.

We also learned that readers have to incorporate good habits into their daily reading life. Some of these habits include taking a sneak peek before you read a book, confirming your sneak peak, and smoothing out your voice once you stretch out a word or phrase! Be sure to ask your reader about some of the silly “bad reading habits” we learned about too!

Writer’s Workshop

Writer’s are also building stamina as authors and illustrators. We are working on our narrative writing unit and starting to rev up our writing muscles. We have been thinking, planning, and writing. Please help your writer at home by having them focus on their handwriting! Developmentally your child is capable of writing lowercase except when they are at the beginning of a sentence or a proper noun!

Specials Schedule

Monday: Music/Tech

Tuesday: PE/Culture (gym shoes needed)

Wednesday: Art

Thursday: Culture/Library

Friday: PE/Music (gym shoes needed)

Today the class was able to check out (up to) 2 books in the library! Please be sure your child returns their library books by Thursday each week so they are able to check out new books! If your child would like to renew a book they are able to renew for one extra week!

Bucket Fillers

This week we also learned how to be bucket fillers! Everyone has an invisible bucket! All buckets can get filled or dipped into. You can fill up someones bucket by doing something kind for someone, helping without being asked, saying good morning to someone, etc. When you fill someone’s bucket, you also fill up your own! You dip into a person’s bucket by being mean, not listening, not keeping your hands to yourself, etc. Starting next week, students can fill out bucket filler letters to make someone feel special in the classroom! We can’t wait to be a classroom of bucket fillers!

NWEA Testing

We will take the reading and math NWEA (MAP) test on Thursday, September 12 and Wednesday, September 16. This is a computerized assessment that that students will complete independently.

Seesaw

Please be sure to activate your Seesaw account ASAP to start viewing videos and photos from the past week! If you attended Curriculum Night, it was in the packet of information you took home. If you were unable to attend, your child brought home the form today! It is a great way for you to get a peak into the learning happening in our classroom. If you did not see the form come home, please let me know and I can send another home!

School Pictures on Friday, Sept. 13

Please be sure to send in the form and payment by next Friday! If you need a new form, please let me know and I can send one home. Every child will get their photo taken (even if they don’t turn in a form) for the yearbook!
