Reader’s & Writer’s Workshop

The students have been working hard to learn expectations and routines in workshop. A HUGE part of 2nd grade is learning how to independently function as a reader and writer! Next week we will kick off our curriculum with the Units of Study in reading and writing. This year the instruction will be delivered a little bit different due to the hybrid plan! The district has purchased videos where a co-teacher (expert) will teach the lesson. While we are hybrid, these lessons will be used at home and in the classroom! This will help with consistency within the district as well as keep things consistent for students whether they are at home or in the classroom. The virtual units come with caregiver videos which are extremely helpful for you to understand how to support your child at home and tell you a little bit about the program!

Click here to view the reading.

Click here to view the writing.

Please watch these prior to next Thursday! I will teach your child the format of the lessons in person on Monday or Tuesday and Wednesday in class! When your child views the videos at home, they will need to enter a username and password! I will show them how to do all of this and I will put the username and password on their work next week! This format will begin next Thursday and Friday!

Social Studies: September 11

We read a book titled The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. An incredible story about Philip Petit, the man who walked between the Twin Towers. This was a beautiful segue into talking about 911. I found a kid friendly cartoon that taught the kids about 911 and the impact it had on the history of the USA. We did not dive too deep but learned about the history of what happened and how it changed the world forever. I spoke about how I remembered exactly where I was when it happened. I mentioned that most of their parents could probably remember exactly where and what they were doing on that day! Your son or daughter may ask you to share your story!

Social Emotional Learning

This week we have been learning how to be more self aware! We started by talking about emotions and then how we communicate those emotions to our family and friends! Throughout the year we will have different topics or themes we will discuss to help us learn and grow as second graders! We will use books, discussions and activities for the students to deepen their social emotional intelligence! Next week we will continue to learn how to be more self aware with a focus on personality strengths and confidence/self-esteem!

Beginning of the Year Assessments

It is really important that I take the time to assess and see where each child is at academically! I have administered different assessments in each subject area (writing, phonics, reading, and math) so I can meet the students needs where they are at. I will reach out to you in the next few weeks if I notice your child may need some extra supports/practice at home or I have some immediate concerns.

Homework

Did I scare you with that big heading? Don’t fret! We are easing into our new normal at school! Having kids back in school has been a giant adjustment to your lives as well as each 2nd graders life! The only homework that is a MUST (for now) is having your child read each night. It is so important that you set aside that time for them to read. That could mean you reading a chapter book with them and discussing, them reading to you, or they could read to a sibling. It does not matter what form the reading comes in, as long as they are falling in love with reading. If reading is a struggle each night, please reach out to me! This is the time where we hook kids to love reading for pleasure! 20 minutes each night would be amazing! If you can’t swing it every night because life gets in the way, its okay! Try again the next night!
