Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop

This week reader’s and writer’s continued to increase their stamina and get back into the routine of good habits! As readers they practiced predicting what will come next based on evidence in their book. They also learned that to remember a book forever and ever, it helps to tell someone else about it. Readers can mark important parts in their book to retell what happened. They can use post its to mark pages that are important to the story. At this age, students should expect to mark 5 big parts. Today readers reread to notice new details in a story. Readers can return to the same adventure, the same book, and notice more details and understand the story in new ways.

In Writer’s Workshop we learned the process of Writer’s Workshop. During this unit, students will think of ideas for small moment stories by thinking about their own lives and things that have happened to them - a time when they had a big feeling, times they learned something, or first or last times. Then, they pick one and plan it by making a few quick sketches and writing key words to hold onto each part. After that, they write their whole story! We also looked at a 2nd grade exemplar text and look closely at his writing to see what we could learn from it!

Math Workshop

During our 1st unit in math students will review concepts from 1st grade and start to learn routines and structures of 2nd grade math. The students were introduced to Connect Ed on the computer during their hybrid days at home. Students will use Connect Ed to use math manipulatives, play games and sometimes view lessons.

MAP Testing

Earlier this week, a letter went home stating FHPS’s plan for MAP testing. In 2nd grade we typically take a reading and math MAP test in the fall, winter, and summer. This year, the district has opted to take the “screener version”. This version of the test has half the amount of questions but will still give teachers insight on what areas are strengths and areas to grow!

School Pictures

A form was sent home for you to order pictures. Cohort B will have their photos taken on Friday, Sept. 25 and Cohort A will have their photos taken on Monday, Sept. 28. If you misplaced the form, please let me know ASAP and I can grab you one from the office!

School Schedule

Cohort A: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday

Cohort B: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday

Beginning on September 28, all students will come every day!

Independent Functioning

The 2nd graders have been away from school since March! It has been a HUGE change for them to have some independence and be away from home! The transition from 1st to 2nd grade is a big one in regards to independent functioning but even harder since they haven’t been in school! Your child should be able to independently do the following:

If you child has difficulty with any of these skills, please work on them at home! Tying shoes is really important because teachers and students are not able to get close enough to help tie shoes!

Meadow Brook Library

We will not be coming into the library at this time for library books. We very much want you to check-out a book each week to remind yourselves how much fun reading is, and to get better and better at it. In our Google Classroom, I have included a virtual library that Mrs. Landman created! You can use to find a weekly read aloud (click on the book on the shelf). The link to the classroom is at the top of our Google Classroom under “Classwork.“There is a video that will tell you how to go to the book catalog and find a book you would like to check out and place a hold on it (click on the laptop). Mrs Landman will deliver the book to your classroom on days you are at school. There is also a video on how to use our Overdrive system that lets you checkout electronic books and read on your chromebooks (click on the blue letter O on the bookshelf). If you have any questions click on the red question mark and email me. If it is easier you can also email me the name of the book you would like to checkout. In the next few weeks, Mrs. Landman will email me a Google Form that your child can use to let her know which book they would like to check out. For now, you can email either Mrs. Landman ro myself which book your child would like!
