Readers Workshop

This week in Reader’s Workshop we learned that readers get stronger by reading a lot! We realized that we can’t just expect to get better at reading! We have to put in the effort and train our reading muscles to get stronger and stronger. The readers now have a book log in their book boxes to record their reading! Pretty soon the students will bring home a book from their book box to read at home each night with a log! We also learned that when we read we want to “scoop up words.” As 1st grade readers, we read very choppy, but as 2nd grade readers we are going to scoop up words to read in longer phrases.

Husky Hustle

The Husky Hustle is next week! Please send your child in something comfortable to walk/run in on Thursday. The pep rally begins at 12:05 and we will walk/run at 1:25. Please send back in your envelopes that went home earlier this week! If we have 90% of our class turn in the envelopes, we will be entered into a raffle to get a pizza party! Your donation can even be $1! When your child turns in their envelope, I will give them a cool FHN bracelet that glows in the dark! Hope to see some of you there cheering us on at the Husky Hustle.

Social Studies

One of our 2nd grade standards in Social Studies is learning about communities. We kicked off the unit learning about 2 different types of communities: urban, suburban, and rural! Students applied their learning and created an art piece that tied in the people, places, things you might find in each of those communities. Check out Seesaw today to see pictures of their hard work!

Game Changers

Today we will have visitors from Forest Hills Northern who will talk to us about being Game Changers. This is a great program created to instill the values that Mike Sadler (a former MSU kicker and FHN graduate) lived by. He lost his life in a car accident a few years ago and his mother helped this incredible program titled Game Changers. Click here to read a little bit about the backstory of the program! The students will visit the 2nd and 4th graders at Meadow Brook six times throughout the year!

MAP Testing

We will finish MAP testing today! These results will be printed off by the school and shared with you over the next several weeks. The transition between 1st to 2nd is a HUGE jump. In 1st grade almost everything was read to them. In 2nd grade they must read everything on their own. We will take the next two more times throughout the year.

Birthdays

We love celebrating birthdays in room 248! Please remember Meadow Brooks policy on birthdays and if you would like to send in something to celebrate, have it not be food related!

Birthday invitations are real easy to pass out at school BUT please only let your child pass them out at school if the entire class is invited, all boys or all girls. If only a few people are invited, I kindly ask that you refrain from having your child pass them out to kids in class.

Technology Class

Every Monday we have Technology class in the computer lab. This week the students began Typing Club. This is a Forest Hills initiative and all students begin in 2nd grade. We started on Monday and the kids had a small taste of what its like to try to type! Try to encourage your child to start typing with their fingers in correct spots! This is a program that we will complete in class! Next week I will introduce https://xtramath.org/#/home/index. This site will help students with math facts. This is a sit they can also access at home to practice their fact fluency!

Field Trip

On Friday, October 4 all 2nd graders will be taking a field trip to Robinettes Orchard. We will be leaving school at approximately 9:00 a.m, and will be returning in time for lunch. We will be learning about how apples are grown and harvested. The 2nd grade team would like to travel to Robinettes as a grade level, because of that, our wagons are filled to capacity. We will not be able to accommodate parent chaperones on this field trip. Thank you for your understanding. We will go rain or shine so please be sure your son or daughter is dressed accordingly. There will be several field trips this year where parents are invited!
