Reader’s Workshop

Reader’s learned that they need to read at a pace that is not too fast and not too slow- one that allows them to understand what they are reading. If you notice your child reading too quickly, help make them aware of their pace. If students are reading too fast, their comprehension lacks and their accuracy. Students who are reading too slow and choppy, the book may be too difficult. We also looked closely at text to fin comparisons, invented words, and figurative language and ask “What might the author want me to see, to understand?

Writer’s Workshop

We kicked off our new writing unit titled: Writing About Reading. Students will be writing letters about their favorite characters from books. I would love for the students to be able to mail their letter out to a family member, teacher or friend! There was an envelope sent home with the homework packet this week. Please help your child address the envelope to someone they think might enjoy receiving a letter! Also include a postage stamp on the envelope. All envelopes must be turned in by Monday, February 3. No need to put anything inside the envelope or seal it! We will do all of that in class!

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom please reach out! I would love to have parent volunteers during Writer’s Workshop (9:05-10:00) Monday-Thursday!

Math Workshop

This week we finished up unit 5 in math. This unit focused on many skills that were easily differentiated to meet the needs of each student. Students learned how to use many different diagrams and templates to assist them in solving word problems. We also adding 10 and 100 mentally! Students gained a lot of fluency with adding big numbers mentally and with an open number line.

Science

Scientists began a unit on “states of matter” this week. We began by talking about properties of objects and sorting things. We finished the week learning about matter and solid objects.

Valentine’s Day

We will have a short but sweet Valentine’s Day Celebration on Friday, February 14 from 2:50-3:45. Feel free to stop by! Students will also pass out Valentine’s in the morning. Your child may (but does not have to) bring in Valentine’s for their peers. I will attach our class roster to my weekly email, and send a hard copy home! We have spoken a lot about gratitude this year so I am hoping the students can think of Valentine’s Day as a day to show others gratitude and how thankful we are for their friendship!

We will also participate in a day of service on Valentine’s Day. We will use this day to partner with Kids Food Basket to assemble, prepare, and load as many bags of trail mix as possible to help children affected by hunger right here in our local community, and even within our school. From now through February 13, 2020, we are seeking food donations in preparation for our Day of Service learning. Students will also be decorating bags for the Kids Food Basket organization. Please bring items to school at any time and place them in the bins/boxes outside our classroom and inside the front doors of school. The following items are needed: large containers of raisins, bags of small pretzel twists, Cheerios (original and plain only- off brand okay), and cheese crackers (goldfish or cheezits work best).
